About Us

Welcome to Chegutu RDC

Background, population & Establishment

  • Chegutu RDC is a local authority established in terms of the Rural District Councils Act [Chapter 29: 13].
  • The Council was formed after the amalgamation of four Councils in 1998 namely Mhondoro District Council, Msengezi District Council, Norton Selous District Council and Chegutu Rural District Council.
  • Chegutu Rural District Council Head Office is located about 107 km South-West of the Capital City Harare.
  • Chegutu Rural District population is around 178,906 inhabitants from the 2022 ZIMSTAT Census preliminary results.
  • Chegutu was initially established as a mining settlement by gold prospectors, mining for gold and nickel remains important in the area.

Location

  • Chegutu is one of the Mashonaland West Province’s 7 Districts.
  • It borders Zvimba Rural District Council to the North, Sanyati Rural District Council to the West , Manyame Rural District Council to the East and Mhondoro Ngezi Rural District Council to the South West.
  • Chegutu lies on the A5 highway between Harare and Bulawayo. This makes it an important corridor. It has an excellent road and rail transportation networks which links it with major cities with Zimbabwe.
  • Chegutu Municipality and Norton Town Council are islands within Chegutu RDC. The Council has got 29 Wards with 29 elected Councillors. Council has 6 committees which are Human Resources and Administration, Finance, Social Services, Environment Management, Roads Works and Planning and Audit. The Councillors are the policy makers.
