Welcome to Chegutu RDC

Background, population & Establishment

  • Chegutu RDC is a local authority established in terms of the Rural District Councils Act [Chapter 29: 13].
  • The Council was formed after the amalgamation of four Councils in 1998 namely Mhondoro District Council, Msengezi District Council, Norton Selous District Council and Chegutu Rural District Council.
  • Chegutu Rural District Council Head Office is located about 107 km South-West of the Capital City Harare.
  • Chegutu Rural District population is around 178,906 inhabitants from the 2022 ZIMSTAT Census preliminary results.
  • Chegutu was initially established as a mining settlement by gold prospectors, mining for gold and nickel remains important in the area.

Location

  • Chegutu is one of the Mashonaland West Province’s 7 Districts.
  • It borders Zvimba Rural District Council to the North, Sanyati Rural District Council to the West , Manyame Rural District Council to the East and Mhondoro Ngezi Rural District Council to the South West.
  • Chegutu lies on the A5 highway between Harare and Bulawayo. This makes it an important corridor. It has an excellent road and rail transportation networks which links it with major cities with Zimbabwe.
  • Chegutu Municipality and Norton Town Council are islands within Chegutu RDC. The Council has got 29 Wards with 29 elected Councillors. Council has 6 committees which are Human Resources and Administration, Finance, Social Services, Environment Management, Roads Works and Planning and Audit. The Councillors are the policy makers.

COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND BUSINESS SUPPORT

Mining

The rich National Great Dyke passes through the District so as to promote various mining activities. This is evidenced by the presence of various large-scale mining companies such as Zimplats and Afrochine down to small-scale miners. Chegutu District has a vast of minerals such as platinum, gold, chrome and nickel besides other mining opportunities such as quarry.

Agriculture

One of Zimbabwe's largest textile mills, David Whitehead was established there. Wheat is grown with the aid of irrigation from the nearby Mupfure River, and cattle rearing is also a significant activity. The Cotton and Grain Marketing Boards established depots in Chegutu for cotton and grain respectively which serves as evidence of intensive agricultural activities within the Chegutu Rural District as it is blessed with rich and fertile soils.

Manufacturing

The abundance of raw materials resulted in the establishment of Sunny Yi Feng, the Country’s largest ceramic producer and one of the greatest tile manufacturer regionally besides the Norton brick molding company which is housed within our jurisdiction.

HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Chegutu RDC runs 18 functional clinics around the District. It has managed to build state of the art clinics using Devolution funds which have been strategically placed around the District. It has a well equipped ambulance which also a mobile clinic.
